From Sketch to Tech Pack: Our 3-Step Development Process

So you have a clothing idea. Maybe it's been living in your head for months, a silhouette you keep sketching in the margins of notebooks, a fabric you've been obsessing over, a gap in the market you're certain you can fill.

The problem? You're not sure how to get from that idea to something a manufacturer can actually produce.

That's exactly what we do at Lilith Apparel. We take emerging brands and startup founders from concept to production-ready files. No fashion degree required. Here's a transparent look at our five-step process and what you can expect at every stage.

Step 1: Concept Discovery

Every project starts with a conversation.

Before we touch a single design file, we get to know your brand, your vision, and your customer. Who are you designing for? What does this garment need to do? What's your target price point, and where are you planning to manufacture?

This stage sounds simple, but it's actually the most important. A hoodie designed for a luxury streetwear brand has completely different construction requirements than one designed for an activewear startup targeting outdoor retailers. We ask the right questions upfront so nothing gets lost in translation later.

We will also discuss your design idea in-depth. We will walk through all the elements of what you want to create. How does it fit, what colors are the fabrics and trims, how many sizes will there be, do you want your drawcord ends knotted or stitched. We can get pretty specific here. If you haven’t thought too in-depth about your design, don’t worry we will look at everything together.

What you'll bring to this step: Reference images, mood boards, rough sketches, fabric ideas, or even just a clear description of what you're imagining. You don't need to have it all figured out, that's what we're here for.

Step 2: 3D Design & Digital Fitting

This is where your garment comes to life, before a single piece of fabric is cut.

Using advanced 3D fashion design software, we build a virtual version of your garment and fit it on a digital avatar. You can see exactly how the silhouette falls, how proportions work, and how different color-ways or fabric weights affect the overall look.

This step is a game changer for startup brands. Traditionally, you'd have to pay for a physical sample, which can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars — just to find out the fit isn't right. With digital fitting, we identify and fix those issues virtually, before you spend a cent on sampling.

This is the stage where we iron out the vision. You will be able to clearly see how your design looks and fits. This is a great time to rework anything you're not in love with. We typically do a couple round of 3D samples. You give us your thoughts and revisions and we create an updated digital garment for you. Once you’re happy with the design we are ready to move forward to the next step!

What you'll get: 3D renderings of your garment, digital fit review, and any necessary design adjustments before moving to patterns.

Step 3: Pattern Making & Tech Pack Creation

Once we understand your styles, our team gets to work. At this stage you can sit back and relax, and we will take care of making your design factory ready. There are several steps going on behind the scenes.

First we translate your digital design into professional flat technical sketches, also called CADs (Computer Aided Design drawings). These are precise, clean illustrations that show every design detail: seam placements, pocket positions, hardware, closures, stitching details, and construction notes.

Unlike mood board illustrations or fashion sketches, technical flats are designed to communicate with manufacturers. They're not about looking pretty, they're about being precise. A well-drawn flat eliminates ambiguity and prevents costly miscommunications down the line.

With the design finalized, our pattern makers build the technical foundation of your garment.

Pattern making is both a science and a craft. Every seam allowance, notch, grain line, and dart has to be precise. Patterns are the instructions your manufacturer follows to cut and construct your garment. A poorly made pattern means inconsistent sizing, fit problems, and wasted fabric. A well-made pattern means clean, consistent production.

The tech pack is the final deliverable, and it's the document that makes or breaks your production run.

Think of a tech pack as the complete instruction manual for your garment. It takes everything we've built through the previous steps and packages it into a single comprehensive document that any manufacturer, anywhere in the world, can follow without needing to call you for clarification.

A Lilith Apparel tech pack includes:

  • Technical flat sketches (front, back, and detail views)

  • A complete measurement spec sheet with all points of measure

  • Construction and stitching details

  • Materials and trims list with specifications

  • Colorway options and artwork placement guides

  • Labeling and packaging requirements

  • Any additional finishing notes

This document is what you send to manufacturers when requesting quotes and placing production orders. A thorough, professional tech pack reduces sampling rounds, speeds up production timelines, and dramatically lowers the risk of expensive errors.

What you'll get: A fully production-ready tech pack, delivered as a professional PDF and editable file. As well as production-ready patterns in your base size.

Sampling and Production

Now you have all the item you need to work with manufacturers. All the file we create are yours, you can use them to shop around or with any factory of your choice. With the pattern and techpack they will have a clear understand of what the need to create and how to do it. At this stage you would work with your manufacturer to create samples. However we are always available for support as you work through the next stages of the development process.

We are happy to help with answering any questions or trouble shooting with your manufacturer, with can also help fit your samples after you receive them, make any pattern or techpack updates, and do size grading and marking once your ready to move into production.

Ready to Start?

Whether you have a full concept ready to develop or just a rough idea you want to explore, we'd love to hear about your project. Our team works with small brands and first-time founders every day, we know how to ask the right questions and fill in the gaps.
